The progressive access route: stepping up from A1 or A2

Already hold an A1 or A2 licence? After two years you can move up a category with one further practical test.

· 2 min read

If you passed your full licence young, you started on a restricted category. Progressive access lets you move up without taking the theory test again.

From A1 to A2

  • Hold your A1 licence for at least two years.
  • Take a further practical test on an A2 bike.
  • You don't need a new theory test or CBT.

From A2 to A

  • Hold your A2 licence for at least two years.
  • Be at least 21.
  • Take a further practical test on a Category A bike.
  • Again, no theory test or CBT needed.

Is the further test the same?

Yes. It's module 1 and module 2, the same as a normal practical test, but on the bigger bike for the category you're moving up to.

Or wait for direct access

If you reach 24 before your two years are up, you can take the direct access route instead. That means a CBT (if yours has lapsed), a theory test and modules 1 and 2. Most riders already on A2 find the progressive route quicker.

Getting ready

Stepping up to a heavier, more powerful bike takes adjustment. Slow control, U-turns and emergency stops all feel different. Training on the bigger bike before your test is time well spent.

We run upgrade courses on consecutive days with your tests booked in. Call 01708 986100 to arrange yours.
