Module 2 is the road test. It can only be taken after you've passed module 1, and your theory pass must still be valid. It lasts about 40 minutes.
Before you ride
- Eyesight check. You read a number plate at 20 metres. If you can't, the test ends there.
- Safety and balance questions. You'll be asked questions about checking the bike and carrying a passenger or load.
On the road
You'll wear a radio earpiece, and the examiner follows you on another motorcycle, giving directions. You'll ride on different types of roads and in different traffic conditions. You may be asked to:
- pull up at the side of the road
- pull out from behind a parked vehicle
- do a hill start
Independent riding
For about 10 minutes you'll ride without turn-by-turn directions. You'll follow road signs or a series of directions given at the start. It's fine to ask for the directions again. Taking a wrong turn isn't a fault, as long as you ride safely.
What the examiner looks for
- Good observation, including the lifesaver look.
- Correct road position.
- Appropriate speed for the road and conditions.
- Safe progress, neither too hesitant nor too fast.
- Clear, correct signals.
You're allowed up to 10 riding faults (minor faults). One serious or dangerous fault means a fail.
After you pass
The examiner gives you a pass certificate. Your licence can be updated automatically, and you can ride without L plates straight away within the limits of your new category.
Not sure which category to go for? Read A1, A2 or A: which licence should you go for?
