The motorcycle theory test: how it works and how to pass

The two parts of the motorcycle theory test, the pass marks and how to revise for both.

· 2 min read

You need to pass the motorcycle theory test before you can book your practical module tests for an A1, A2 or A licence. You don't need it for a CBT.

Booking

Book it on GOV.UK and take it at a theory test centre. Make sure you book the motorcycle test. A car theory pass doesn't count for a motorcycle licence.

Part 1: multiple choice

  • 50 questions in 57 minutes.
  • You need 43 out of 50 to pass.
  • Questions cover the Highway Code, road signs, safety, rules for riders and some case studies.

Part 2: hazard perception

  • 14 video clips filmed from the rider's point of view.
  • You click when you see a hazard developing.
  • One clip has two hazards, so there are 15 in total, each worth up to 5 points.
  • You need 44 out of 75 to pass.

The earlier you click once a hazard starts to develop, the more points you get. Clicking constantly or in a pattern scores zero for that clip.

Your pass certificate

You must pass both parts at the same sitting. Your pass certificate lasts two years. You need to pass module 2 within that time, or you'll have to take the theory test again.

Bring the certificate to your module tests. We can't start full licence training if you can't show it.

How to revise

  • Use the official DVSA theory test app or book.
  • Read the Highway Code, especially the rules for motorcyclists.
  • Practise hazard perception clips until spotting hazards early feels natural.
  • Revise in short, regular sessions rather than one long cram.

After you pass

With a valid CBT and a theory pass, you're ready for module 1 and module 2. See module 1 explained and module 2 explained.
