The practical motorcycle test comes in two parts. Module 1 is the off-road part, taken on a marked-out area at a DVSA test centre. It usually takes about 20 minutes.
What you need
- Your licence.
- Your valid theory test pass certificate.
- Your CBT certificate.
- A suitable bike for the licence category, with L plates.
The manoeuvres
- Wheeling the bike without the engine running, and parking it on its stand.
- Slalom and figure of eight round a line of cones.
- Slow ride, as if in slow traffic.
- U-turn within a marked area.
- Cornering and controlled stop, stopping at a set point.
- Cornering and emergency stop, at a minimum speed of about 50km/h (32mph).
- Cornering and hazard avoidance, swerving round an obstacle, also at about 50km/h.
Speed checks
The emergency stop and the hazard avoidance are timed through a speed trap. If you're under the minimum speed, you may be given another attempt. Nerves often make riders slow down on the approach, so practise building speed through the bend.
Common faults
- Putting a foot down during slow control exercises.
- Touching or clipping a cone.
- Poor observation, especially the lifesaver look before moving off.
- Locking a wheel in the emergency stop.
How we prepare you
Full licence courses run on consecutive days, with your tests already booked. You'll practise every manoeuvre before test day. Call 01708 986100 to talk about your course.
Once you've passed module 1, you move on to module 2, the road test.
