DAS stands for Direct Access Scheme. It's the route to a full, unrestricted Category A motorcycle licence for riders aged 24 or over. You don't need to hold an A1 or A2 licence first.
What you need
- A provisional or full car licence with provisional motorcycle entitlement.
- A valid CBT certificate.
- A motorcycle theory test pass.
- Passes in module 1 and module 2, both taken on a large motorcycle.
The training bike
For Category A tests, the bike must have an engine of at least 595cc and power of at least 50kW. That's a big step up from a 125. Most riders need time to get used to the weight and power, especially for slow control and the U-turn.
How the course works
Our full licence courses run on consecutive days, with your DVSA tests pre-booked. The training builds up from getting comfortable on the bigger bike to test preparation for module 1 and then module 2. Exactly how many days you need depends on your experience.
Before you book
- Pass your theory test first. Without a valid certificate you can't take your module tests.
- Be honest about your experience. If you've only just done your CBT, you'll need more time than someone who's been riding a 125 for two years.
- Make sure you're available for every scheduled day. The dates are fixed around the booked tests.
Is direct access worth it?
If you're 24 or over and know you want a bigger bike, yes. It saves the time and cost of taking a restricted licence first and upgrading later.
