A CBT certificate lasts two years from the day you complete it. The date is on your DL196. If you ride after it expires, you're riding without a valid licence, and your insurance won't cover you.
Option 1: take the CBT again
You can retake the CBT as many times as you like. There's no limit.
If you already ride regularly and have your own road legal bike, our CBT Renewal course is four hours instead of a full day. You need:
- a valid CBT certificate (so book before it expires)
- your own bike with road tax, insurance and an MOT if it needs one
If you haven't ridden much since your last CBT, book the full-day course. It's better to spend the extra time than to struggle on the day.
Option 2: go for your full licence
If you've been riding for a couple of years, a full licence is often the better choice. It lets you:
- take off the L plates
- carry a passenger
- ride on motorways
- stop renewing your CBT every two years
Which licence you can take depends on your age. See A1, A2 or A: which licence should you go for?
Don't leave it late
Theory test slots and practical test dates can take weeks to get. If your CBT runs out in the next few months and you want a full licence, start with the theory test now.
An expired CBT
If your certificate has already expired, stop riding on the road. Book a full-day CBT. The renewal course is only for riders with a valid CBT.
