Can you fail a CBT?

The CBT isn't a test, so you can't fail it. But you can finish the day without a certificate. Here's why, and what to do next.

It's the question we're asked most. The short answer is no, a CBT isn't a test, so there's no pass or fail. But you only get your certificate when your instructor is satisfied you can ride safely on your own.

How the certificate works

The CBT has five parts, and you complete them in order. You don't move on until your instructor is happy with the one before. The last part is at least two hours on the road. If everything is safe by the end, you're given your DL196 certificate.

Why some riders don't finish in a day

Everyone learns at a different speed. Common reasons a CBT isn't completed on the day:

  • Not yet comfortable with clutch control or slow riding.
  • Missing observations, especially the lifesaver look over the shoulder.
  • Losing confidence in traffic on the road ride.
  • Arriving without the right licence or kit, so training can't start.

None of these mean you can't ride. They mean you need more practice.

What happens next

Your instructor will explain what you need to work on. You can then book further training to finish.

How to give yourself the best chance

  • Read the Highway Code, especially signs and junctions. See what to revise before your CBT.
  • Practise on a bicycle if it's been a while.
  • If you've never ridden, consider a two-hour introduction session first.
  • Sleep well and eat before you come. It's a long day.
  • Ask questions. Instructors would much rather explain something twice than see you guess.

The honest truth

Most people complete their CBT in one day. The ones who don't usually come back and finish quickly, and they're often better riders for it.
