If you've booked a CBT with us, here's how the day works. Knowing what's coming makes it easier to relax and enjoy it.
Where to go
We train at Barking Rugby Union Club, Gale Street, Goresbrook, Dagenham RM9 4TX. Give yourself plenty of time to find it and arrive a little early.
Checks first
Your instructor checks your licence and your kit. Then you do the eyesight check, reading a number plate at 20.5 metres. If your licence or kit isn't right, we can't go any further. Check the what to bring list the night before.
Getting to know the bike
We'll give you an approved helmet and jacket if you don't have your own. You'll be matched with a bike, manual or automatic, whichever you booked. Your instructor shows you the controls, the checks to do before riding, and how to use the stand and wheel the bike.
Riding on the training area
This is where most of the morning goes. Away from traffic, you'll practise:
- moving off and stopping
- riding slowly under control
- turning left and right, and figures of eight
- braking, including an emergency stop
- observations and the lifesaver look
- clutch control and gear changes, on a manual
Road theory
Before going out, your instructor talks through road riding: the Highway Code, being seen, road position, junctions and hazards. You'll be asked questions.
On the road
The road ride is at least two hours on the roads around Dagenham. There are never more than two learners with each instructor, and your instructor gives directions by radio as you go.
Your certificate
When your instructor is satisfied you can ride safely on your own, you get your CBT certificate. From then you can ride on L plates for two years.
