Using your own bike for training: the rules

You can train on your own motorcycle or scooter, but it must be road legal and you'll need to show the paperwork.

· 2 min read

Some riders prefer to train on the bike they'll ride every day. It can help, because you learn the controls and the feel of your own machine. But there are rules.

The bike must be road legal

Before the course, check your bike has:

  • Insurance that covers you as a learner rider.
  • Road tax (Vehicle Excise Duty).
  • A valid MOT if it's over three years old.
  • Working lights, indicators, horn and brakes.
  • Tyres with legal tread and no damage.
  • L plates, front and back.

Bring the paperwork

You'll need to show proof of insurance, tax and MOT on the day. For a CBT renewal you also need your current CBT certificate.

If the bike isn't legal or suitable

If your bike isn't legal or suitable for training, your instructor can't use it, and the course fee isn't refunded. Riding an illegal bike on the road also means our insurance isn't valid. So check everything in advance.

There's no discount

Using your own bike doesn't reduce the course price. You're paying for the training, the instructor's time and the use of the site.

Before you ride in

If you're riding to the course on a valid CBT, great. If your CBT has expired, you can't legally ride your bike to the training, so arrange transport for it or train on one of ours.

The CBT Renewal course

Our four-hour CBT Renewal is only for riders with their own bike and a valid CBT. It's for people who ride regularly. If you haven't ridden much lately, book the full day.
