CBT for delivery riders: what you need to start

Want to deliver food or parcels on a scooter? The licence, training and insurance you need before your first shift.

· 2 min read

Delivery work is one of the most common reasons people book a CBT. A 125cc scooter is quick in traffic and cheap to run. Before you sign up to a platform, make sure you have the right paperwork.

1. A licence and a CBT

You need a provisional or full driving licence, and a valid CBT certificate. On a CBT you can ride up to 125cc on L plates.

If you have a full EU or other overseas licence, check with the DVLA whether it can be used in the UK and whether you need to exchange it.

2. The right insurance

Standard motorbike insurance for social use, or social and commuting use, does not cover deliveries. You need insurance that covers delivering goods for payment, often called hire and reward or courier cover. Riding for work without it means you're effectively uninsured.

3. A road legal bike

Your scooter needs up-to-date road tax, an MOT once it's over three years old, and working lights, brakes and tyres. A delivery bike covers a lot of miles, so check tyres and chain (if it has one) every week.

4. Proper kit

You'll spend hours on the bike in all weathers. Good gloves, a waterproof jacket with armour and boots that cover the ankle are worth the money. See jacket, trousers and boots for new riders and motorcycle gloves for what to look for.

Riding for a living

Delivery riding means lots of junctions, U-turns and tight deadlines. The pressure to be quick is real. The riders who last are the ones who don't let it change how they ride. Take the lifesaver look every time you change position, and never ride on the phone.
