How to get a provisional licence for your CBT

You need a provisional or full driving licence before you can take a CBT. Here's how to apply and what to check.

· 2 min read

You can't start a CBT without a valid licence. If you don't already drive, that means a provisional driving licence with moped and motorcycle entitlement.

When can I apply?

You can apply from 15 years and 9 months old. You can start riding a moped at 16 and a motorcycle up to 125cc at 17.

How to apply

The quickest way is online at GOV.UK: apply for your first provisional driving licence. You'll need:

  • a form of identity, such as a UK passport
  • your addresses for the last three years
  • your National Insurance number, if you know it
  • a way to pay the fee (check the current fee on GOV.UK)

You can also apply by post using a form from the Post Office. Online is usually faster.

Check the categories

A standard provisional licence includes provisional entitlement for mopeds (category AM) and motorcycles (category A). It's still worth checking the back of your card once it arrives.

Already have a car licence?

A full car licence also works for a CBT. It includes provisional motorcycle entitlement, so you don't need a separate provisional licence.

What to bring on the day

Bring your photocard licence. If you have an old paper licence, bring your passport with it. Photos or photocopies of a licence aren't accepted, and without a valid licence we can't legally start your training.

Name or address changed?

If your details have changed, update them with the DVLA before your course. It's free to do online and avoids problems on the day.

Once your licence arrives, you're ready to book your CBT.
