Manual or automatic: which CBT should I book?

Should you do your CBT on a geared motorcycle or an automatic scooter? The differences, and what each lets you ride.

· 2 min read

We teach the CBT on both geared motorcycles and automatic scooters. You choose which when you book. Here's how to decide.

What the certificate covers

A CBT certificate doesn't say manual or automatic. Whichever you train on, you're legally allowed to ride either type up to 125cc afterwards.

That doesn't mean it's a good idea to jump from an automatic straight onto a geared bike. Clutch control and gear changes take practice, especially in slow traffic and on hills. If you train on an automatic and later want a geared bike, book some lessons on gears first.

Choose an automatic if

  • You plan to ride a scooter, for commuting or deliveries.
  • You're nervous and want fewer things to think about on the day.
  • You've never used a clutch in a car or on a bike.

Choose a manual if

  • You want a geared motorcycle.
  • You plan to take your full licence on a manual bike.
  • You drive a manual car and are comfortable with a clutch.

What about the full licence?

The full test is different. If you pass your module tests on an automatic, your licence is restricted to automatics. If you pass on a manual, you can ride both. So if you're heading for a full licence, it makes sense to learn on gears from the start.
