Seventeen is when motorcycling opens up. With a CBT certificate you can ride a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc, which is enough for commuting, getting around London and the A roads.
What you can ride
- A motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc.
- Power output up to 11kW (about 14.6bhp).
- A power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.1kW per kg.
Most bikes sold as "125s" or "learner legal" meet these limits, but check before you buy.
The rules on L plates
- Display L plates on the front and back of the bike (D plates in Wales).
- No pillion passengers.
- No motorways.
These apply for as long as you ride on your CBT.
How long can I ride on a CBT?
Two years. By then you need to pass your full test or take the CBT again. There's no limit on how many times you can retake a CBT, but most riders find the full licence worth it for the freedom it gives.
Your next step: A1
At 17 the full licence available to you is A1. It covers the same 125cc bikes but removes the L plates, and allows passengers and motorways. You'll need:
- A valid CBT.
- A motorcycle theory test pass.
- The module 1 and module 2 practical tests.
From 19 you can go for A2 instead, which covers more powerful bikes. See A1, A2 or A: which licence should you go for?
